How to Free Up Storage on Android Without Deleting Your Photos

Phone storage full? Recover gigabytes on Android by clearing app cache, cleaning WhatsApp media, removing old APKs and offline files, all without losing your photos.

How to Free Up Storage on Android Without Deleting Your Photos

“Storage almost full” usually appears at the worst moment: when you are about to record a video or install an update. Deleting photos feels like the only option, but it rarely is. Most phones hide several gigabytes of junk in caches, chat media and forgotten downloads. Work through these steps and you will usually free 5 to 20 GB without touching a single picture.

Step 1: See what is using the space

Open Settings > Storage (on Samsung: Battery and device care > Storage). You will see a breakdown into Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, Documents and System. Start with the biggest category that is not photos.

Step 2: Clear app caches

Cache is temporary data apps keep to load faster. Browsers, social apps, streaming apps and video editors can store gigabytes of it. Clearing cache does not log you out or delete your data.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps and sort by size if available.
  2. Open a large app, tap Storage, then Clear cache.
  3. Repeat for Instagram, Chrome, YouTube, Telegram, CapCut and similar apps.

Do not tap “Clear data” or “Clear storage” unless you want to reset the app completely.

Step 3: Clean WhatsApp and Telegram media

Chat apps quietly save every forwarded video, sticker and voice note.

  • WhatsApp: Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. Review “Larger than 5 MB” and “Forwarded many times”, and delete in bulk. Then turn off auto-download for videos on mobile data.
  • Telegram: Settings > Data and storage > Storage usage, set “Keep media” to one week and clear the cache.

Step 4: Delete old APK files and downloads

Every APK you install stays in your Downloads folder until you remove it. Large games can leave files of 1 GB or more. Open Files by Google (or your file manager), go to Downloads, sort by size and delete APKs of apps you already installed.

Step 5: Remove offline content you have already watched

Downloaded episodes from Netflix, Prime Video or Hotstar, offline playlists in Spotify, and offline maps can take many gigabytes. Open each app’s Downloads section and remove what you have finished.

Step 6: Uninstall apps you do not use

Android can show unused apps: in the Play Store, tap your profile picture, Manage apps and device > Manage, then sort by “Least used”. Games are often the biggest. Remember that uninstalling removes local game data unless it is synced to the cloud.

Step 7: Move photos to the cloud (without losing them)

If photos really are the issue, back them up instead of deleting them. Google Photos and OneDrive both offer a “Free up space” option that removes only the local copies that are already safely backed up. The photos stay in your library and can be viewed or downloaded any time.

Step 8: Use a memory card if your phone supports one

Set the camera to save to the SD card and move videos and music there. Apps generally run better from internal storage, so keep them there.

Things not to do

  • Do not install “cleaner” or “booster” apps that promise magic. Most show ads and do nothing Android cannot do itself.
  • Do not delete unknown folders in the Android folder; they belong to apps.
  • Do not clear data of apps you use daily without a backup.

How much space should you keep free?

Try to keep at least 10 to 15 percent of storage free. Android needs room for updates, app caches and temporary files. A nearly full phone also gets slower, as explained in our guide to speeding up a slow Android phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why is “System” taking so much space?

It includes Android itself, pre-installed apps and temporary update files. It cannot be reduced much, but a restart sometimes clears leftover update files.

Is it safe to clear cache for all apps?

Yes. Apps rebuild their cache as needed. They may load a little slower the first time.

Does clearing cache delete WhatsApp chats?

No. Chats and media are stored as data, not cache.
