Phones slow down for predictable reasons: storage fills up, too many apps run in the background, and newer app versions ask more of older hardware. You do not need a new phone or a “booster” app. These twelve fixes are what actually makes a difference, starting with the most effective.
1. Restart your phone regularly
A restart clears memory leaks, stuck processes and temporary files. Doing it once every few days is the simplest speed boost there is. Many phones can schedule it automatically: on Samsung, Device care > Auto optimization.
2. Keep at least 10 to 15 percent storage free
Flash storage gets noticeably slower when it is nearly full. Follow our guide to freeing up storage without deleting photos.
3. Update Android and your apps
System updates often include performance fixes. Check Settings > System > Software update. Keep apps updated too, but see tip 9 for older phones.
4. Uninstall or disable unused apps
Every installed app can run background services, sync data and send notifications. Remove apps you have not opened in a month. Pre-installed apps you cannot remove can often be disabled from their app info page.
5. Limit background activity
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, find apps that run a lot in the background and set them to Restricted. Social apps, shopping apps and games are frequent offenders.
6. Reduce or turn off animations
This makes the phone feel much faster instantly.
- Go to Settings > About phone and tap Build number seven times to enable Developer options.
- Open Developer options.
- Set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale and Animator duration scale to 0.5x.
Do not change other developer settings unless you know what they do.
7. Use a lighter launcher and widgets
Live wallpapers and many widgets refresh constantly. Use a static wallpaper and keep only the widgets you really look at.
8. Switch to lite apps
Several big apps have lighter alternatives: Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite alternatives, Google Go apps, and the mobile website in a browser instead of an app you rarely use. They use less memory and storage.
9. Consider older app versions on old phones
Sometimes a new version of an app is simply too heavy for a three-year-old phone. Installing an earlier, lighter version can help. Read how to downgrade an app safely.
10. Clear the cache of heavy apps
Browsers, social media and video editors accumulate large caches that slow them down. Clear them from Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage.
11. Check for malware or adware
Sudden slowness, pop-up ads and fast battery drain can mean an unwanted app. Run a Play Protect scan and review recently installed apps. Our guide on spotting fake apps explains what to look for.
12. Factory reset as a last resort
If nothing else helps, a factory reset returns the phone to its original speed. Back up first, following our backup guide, then go to Settings > System > Reset options.
What does not work
- RAM cleaner and booster apps: Android manages memory itself. Force-closing apps often makes them restart, wasting battery.
- Constantly swiping away recent apps: reopening them takes more power than keeping them paused.
Frequently asked questions
Does a phone get slower over time no matter what?
Hardware does not slow down, but heavier apps and fuller storage make it feel slower. The tips above recover most of the lost speed.
Is 4 GB RAM enough in 2026?
For basic use, yes, with lighter apps and fewer background tasks. Heavy gaming and video editing are smoother with 6 to 8 GB.
Will turning off animations harm my phone?
No. It only changes how screen transitions look. You can switch them back at any time.
