When you try to install an APK, Android stops you with a message saying your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source. This is a safety feature, and switching it on takes ten seconds once you know where to look. Below are the exact steps for stock Android and every major brand.
Why Android asks this question
Up to Android 7, there was one global switch called Unknown sources. Turning it on let any app install other apps, which malware abused. Since Android 8.0 the permission is given per app: you allow only Chrome, or only your file manager, to install APK files. Every other app stays blocked.
The fastest way on any phone
- Tap the APK file in your notifications or Downloads folder.
- In the warning, tap Settings.
- Turn on Allow from this source (or Allow app installs).
- Go back and tap Install.
Stock Android and Google Pixel (Android 8 to 15)
Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps > choose Chrome or Files > turn on Allow from this source.
Samsung (One UI)
Settings > Apps > three-dot menu > Special access > Install unknown apps > select My Files or Chrome > turn it on.
On One UI 6 and later, Auto Blocker blocks all sideloading. Turn it off under Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker before installing, and back on afterwards.
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO (MIUI / HyperOS)
Settings > Apps > Manage apps > three-dot menu > Special app access > Install unknown apps > choose File Manager or Chrome. MIUI also runs its own security scan during the install. Let it finish.
Vivo (Funtouch OS / OriginOS)
Settings > Security & privacy > More security settings > Install unknown apps. Some Vivo phones also ask for your Vivo account password when installing an APK.
Oppo and Realme (ColorOS / Realme UI)
Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. On older versions look under Settings > Additional settings > Privacy.
OnePlus (OxygenOS)
Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
Android 7 and older
Settings > Security > Unknown sources and turn it on. Because this allows every app to install APKs, switch it off again when you are done.
Which app should you allow?
Allow only the app you actually use to open APK files, usually your browser or file manager. Do not allow messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram. Files received in chats are a common way malware spreads.
Turn it off again
Once your app is installed, return to the same screen and switch the permission off. You will be asked again next time, which is exactly the protection you want.
Still cannot install?
- Install button is grey: close floating apps, screen filters and screen recorders.

Frequently asked questions
Is it dangerous to allow unknown apps?
Allowing it for your browser while you install a file you trust is safe. Leaving it on permanently for many apps increases risk.
Does this void my warranty?
No. Installing apps from outside the Play Store is a normal Android feature and does not affect your warranty.
Why can’t I find the setting?
Use the search bar at the top of Settings and type “unknown”. Every brand names the menu slightly differently.
