How to Fix “There Was a Problem Parsing the Package” on Android

The parse error means Android cannot read the APK. Here is why it happens, from broken downloads to unsupported Android versions, and how to fix each cause.

How to Fix “There Was a Problem Parsing the Package” on Android

You tap an APK and Android shows “Parse error: There was a problem parsing the package.” In plain words, Android opened the file and could not understand it. Unlike “App not installed”, this error happens before installation even starts. These are the causes and fixes, in the order you should try them.

Cause 1: The download is incomplete or corrupted

This is the most common reason. If your connection dropped or the browser stopped the download early, the file is cut short.

  • Delete the APK and download it again on a stable Wi-Fi connection.
  • Compare the file size in your file manager with the size on the download page.
  • Try a different browser if the problem repeats.

Cause 2: Your Android version is too old

Every app declares the minimum Android version it supports. If your phone is older, Android cannot parse the file. Check the “Requires Android” value on the app page and compare it with Settings > About phone > Android version. If your phone is too old, look for an older release of the app that still supports your version.

Cause 3: It is not a normal APK

Files ending in .xapk, .apks or .apkm are bundles, and an APK renamed from one of them will not parse. Install bundles with SAI or the matching installer. Our article APK vs XAPK vs APKS explains each format.

Cause 4: The file was modified or damaged

A badly modified APK, or one changed by a “download optimizer”, may be broken. Download the file again from the original page. If the problem persists, the file itself is faulty; try another version.

Cause 5: The installer cannot access the file

Opening an APK directly from a WhatsApp or Telegram chat, or from a cloud app, sometimes gives the installer a temporary link it cannot read.

  1. Save the file to your Downloads folder first.
  2. Open it from Files by Google or your phone’s file manager.
  3. Allow that file manager to install unknown apps. See how to allow unknown apps.

Cause 6: Security software is interfering

Some antivirus apps and the Samsung Auto Blocker can interrupt installation in ways that look like a parse error. Temporarily disable them for a file you trust, then re-enable them.

Cause 7: A stuck Package Installer

Restart the phone. If the error continues for every APK, open Settings > Apps, show system apps, choose Package installer and clear its cache.

Quick checklist

Check Fix
File size smaller than expected? Re-download on Wi-Fi
Android version below requirement? Install an older app version
Extension is .xapk / .apks / .apkm? Use a bundle installer
Opened from a chat app? Save to Downloads, open with file manager
Every APK fails? Restart, clear Package installer cache

Frequently asked questions

Is the parse error a sign of a virus?

Not usually. It almost always means a broken download or an incompatible file. Still, scan unknown files before installing them.

Can I fix a corrupted APK?

No. Download it again. A damaged file cannot be repaired on the phone.

What is the difference between this and “App not installed”?

The parse error means Android could not read the file at all. “App not installed” means it read the file but refused to install it, often due to a signature conflict. See our fix guide.
