How to Update Android Apps Without the Google Play Store

Four reliable ways to update Android apps without Google Play, including APK updates, in-app updaters, F-Droid and update tracker apps, plus how to avoid losing data.

How to Update Android Apps Without the Google Play Store

Most people never think about app updates because the Play Store handles them. But if you installed an app from an APK, use a phone without Google services, or the Play Store simply refuses to update something, you need another way. Here are the options that work, and the one rule that keeps your data safe.

The golden rule: same signature

Android only lets an update replace an app if both are signed by the same developer key. If you installed CapCut from the Play Store, an update APK from the original developer installs fine. A modified APK, signed by someone else, does not. Android will say “App not installed” and you would have to uninstall first, losing local data. Keep this in mind for every method below.

Method 1: Install the newer APK over the old one

  1. Check your current version in Settings > Apps > [app] (scroll to the bottom).
  2. Download the newer APK from a trusted source, choosing the same variant (for example, the same processor type).
  3. Tap the file and choose Update (or Install).

Your settings and data stay in place. On GrabModApk, every app page shows the current version and update date, so you can see when a new version is out.

Method 2: Use the app’s own updater

Many apps distributed outside the Play Store, such as some streaming apps, Telegram’s website version and many open-source apps, check for updates themselves and offer a download inside the app. Look for Check for updates in the app’s settings or About screen.

Method 3: F-Droid for open-source apps

F-Droid is a trusted catalogue of free and open-source apps. It installs and updates apps like a regular store, without a Google account. Popular apps there include NewPipe, Fennec browser, Aegis Authenticator and many tools.

Method 4: Track updates automatically

Apps such as Obtainium watch developer release pages (for example on GitHub) and notify you when a new version is published, then download and install it for you. This is the cleanest option for open-source apps like SimpMusic, which publishes releases on GitHub. Our SimpMusic page lists the latest release.

Updating apps on phones without Google Play

Huawei phones, some Chinese-market phones and custom ROMs often lack Google Play. Options include:

  • The phone maker’s own store (AppGallery, Galaxy Store, GetApps).
  • Aurora Store, an open-source client that downloads apps from Google Play’s servers without the Play Store app.
  • Manual APK updates as in Method 1.

How to avoid losing data when updating

  • Log in to the app’s account or turn on cloud sync before updating.
  • Use the app’s own export or backup option (chats, projects, notes).
  • Do not uninstall unless Android forces you to.
  • Read our guide to backing up Android apps.

Should you turn off Play Store auto-updates?

If you replaced a Play Store app with a different build, the Play Store may try to “update” it back. To stop that, open the app’s Play Store page, tap the three-dot menu and untick Enable auto update.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the update fail with “App not installed”?

The update was signed by a different key than the installed app. See our fix guide.

Is Aurora Store safe?

Aurora Store is open source and widely used. It downloads the same files the Play Store would, but using an anonymous account can occasionally be rate-limited.

Can I update system apps with APK files?

Yes, if the APK is signed by the same company, for example Google apps like Chrome or Gmail. System apps cannot be fully uninstalled, only rolled back to their factory version.
